by so many millions of americans last week, that mitt romney was able to reach through the filter of the media as they like to call it, ann romney referred to it that way in an event in florida last week, and beyond those campaign ads, the very nasty campaign ads coming from the obama campaign to talk directly to the american people, and they feel like that's a factor as well. they are also looking at what they call persuadable voters, those are voters who can swing back and forth, and if you look at that latest pew research center poll, which showed the president with an eight point lead just a couple weeks ago, now mitt romney has a five point lead. obviously there is some give and take there in terms of these numbers, but i have to tell you i did talk to another romney campaign aide who was sounding a bit more cautious saying they would prefer this poll had come out on november 4th, not october 8th. >> we will talk to cornell belcher, a pollster for the obama campaign in a moment. dan, the president's campaign, are they saying anything publicly about these numbers, acknowledging t

it's pretty clear from the convention and from the debate last week, mitt romney is a shameless lying chameleon. he will say anything, he will do anything. the same is true with his running mate, paul ryan. unfortunately, we'll probably hear more of that this week. we do have a great surrogate team and they're on the ground in their respective cities or states. they move around. i certainly move around. you talk about deval patrick, i'm in chicago, rahm emanuel, stephanie rawlings-blake in baltimore, kasim reed, the list goes on and on. we have the best candidate in president obama and vice president biden. we have the greatest surrogate team, and they're on the ground in those places where there are real people with real issues and real problems, and they're talking about the things that the president talks about, jobs and the economy, health care, education, energy, and tax reform. those are the president's themes. he's never walked away from any of those issues, and it's easier, i think quite frankly, for mitt romney to have multiple positions on the same issue because he has no pl

in american lives. what governor romney did so effectively y the debate last week was lay out that plausible alternative case in a way and in a forum where many millions of voters were watching him do that. so he made himself a plausible candidate. he laid out an alternative argument. he wasn't just saying the president hasn't done a good job. he was saying the president hasn't done a good job and these are very specific things i will do differently. that has appeal to women, men, you name it. martha: he had his message in a real, relaxed way than he has in the past. there could be argument that also resonated with female voters. let's take a look at something else. you mentioned this look at moderate voters in a piece that you wrote. and here's the moderate voter position. 49 for president obama. 39 for governor romney. you make an interesting point about this. >> yeah. i just find it an absolutely fascinating finding inside a poll that find governor romney leading president obama. 49%, nearly half of those likely voters surveyed think president obama is more moderate th mitt romn
